Single Rides

By 2024, the NYC MTA aims to phase the MetroCard New Yorkers have been swiping since 1993. The cards will be replaced with the OMNY tap-to-pay system, and while an OMNY card will be offered for those without smartphones or ATM cards equipped with tap-to-pay software, they, as well as the machines that dispense them, will look and feel entirely different.

To celebrate the card I’ve grown up using to traverse my home city, I cut out and printed on a collection of imagined Single Ride MetroCards. The patterns utilize visual motifs that conjure memories of my growing-up experience in Brooklyn from architectural features that always caught my eye to my favorite use of a (then) $2.50 swipe, a trip to Jacob Riis Park. I want to show how this beloved tool for transportation can be more than just that, a tool, but also a record of an experience, and a commemoration of the journey taken.

Each card is made with ink on paper, 2.125"x3.375", in 2023
